Game of Thrones Filming Destinations in Real Life

Game of Thrones is among the most successful television shows globally at the moment. Adapted from “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series by George R.R Martin, finding the most appropriate filming locations for its epic scenes was not easy. Nevertheless, the filming crew managed to identify appropriate locations for shooting the epic scenes of this film.

Here are some of the filming destinations of this TV show in real life:

1.     Dubrovnik

This filming location for the Game of Thrones is quite remarkable. It is surrounded by the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea, ancient walls and several forts that oversee the surroundings. Dubrovnik provided a perfect location for filming all events that happened in King’s Landing. King’s Landing is a fictional capital of the Seven Kingdoms in the film. Taking a short walk in the streets of Dubrovnik city will trigger excitement as you recognize sceneries from this film in this location.

2.     Lokrum

The production crew used Lokrun Island as a stand-in location for Qarth city, which is adjacent to the Jade Sea. Daenerys Targaryen visits this location in season 2. Some garden scenes in the movie were filmed in the Lokrum botanical gardens and Former Benedictine monastery. The island is situated in Eastern Croatian coast and it covers about 72 hectares. It is close to Dubrovnik and you can get there within 15 minutes by a taxi-boat.

3.     Murloug Bay, Northern Ireland

Murloug Bay in Northern Ireland or the Iron Islands is among the most beautiful locations in Northern Ireland coast. It has magnificent views that include Mull of Kintyre and Rathlin Island. Theon Greyjoy and Yara, his sister, ride in this location on their way to meeting their dad. This is after Theon returns from Starks. Murloug Bay is among the most important destinations in this series due to its magnificent views which made it perfect for shooting the scenes.

4.     Fortress of Klis

This Fortress provides Meereen’s outdoor sceneries in the film. The astonishing Dalmatian surroundings’ view makes this location ideal for these sceneries. Situated between Kozjak and Mosor mountains, Fortress of Klis served as the medieval heart of Croatia. Several Croatian Kings resided in this Fortress. During its history, it defined the Map of Europe because this is where Ottoman and Mongolian forces were held. The elite military that engaged in guerilla warfare against the Turkish armies, the Uskoks, resided here in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

5.     Cellars of the Diocletian Palace

In the Game of Thrones, Cellars of the Diocletian Palace have been transformed to look like Meereen pathways, a city-state that Daenerys Targaryen troops conquer in season 4. In real life, this location is the place where Diocletian, a Roman Emperor, built a large palace at the beginning of the 4th century. Eventually, the palace became an independent town which is the modern Split. Cellars feature huge underground halls that are operational even today, serving as a market place location. In the film, this location depicts catacombs where the draconian servants of Daenerys are locked up following the murder of a child by the black-scaled dragon.

These are just 5 real life filming destinations for the Game of Throne. Consider visiting some of these destinations to learn more about them and what made them appropriate filming locations for this epic film.
