Summary of the University of California


The University of California is a world-class, public research institution. It is a public universities’ system in California founded in Oakland in 1855. Initially, the institution was a private College of California. In 1868, the college became the University of California after merging with the Agricultural, Mining, and Mechanical Arts College. The later was a land-grant school established in 1866.


The University relocated its main campus to Berkeley in 1873. Over the years, this higher learning institution has been absorbing other schools and opening more campuses. Today, the University of California has campuses at Davis, Los Angeles, Irvine, Merced, San Diego, Riverside, Santa Barbra, Santa Cruz, and San Francisco. Its total enrollment stands at around 200,000. The University system is governed by 26 regents’ board members. Its colleges and schools include those for public health, optometry, public policy, social welfare, journalism, environmental design, and natural resources….
