Jaipur Rugs is a rug brand whose journey began in Churu
village in Rajasthan. Nand Kishore Chaudhary founded this brand or company in
1978. On finishing is college studies, Nand started working in a shoe shop that
was owned by his father in Churu village. At that time, Churu was a small
village or town with little purchasing power. It was at this time that Nand
realized that the shoe business didn’t have much potential.
Passion
Though Nand was offered a cashier job, he knew that
he was not looking for a government job. His vision was to start something big
that belonged to him. It was at this juncture that a friend told him about hand
knotted rugs and their huge demand. Nand went to Jaipur to study this industry.
He visited carpet looms to see how rugs were made. On seeing how looms worked,
he became interested in working with artisans directly. That’s when he borrowed
his father Rs 5,000 to buy looms.
Nand hired 8 weavers from what was at that time
called the ‘lower caste’ and one master weaver. Thus, the current Jaipur Rugs
brand started with two looms only. Though there was societal stigma, it didn’t
matter to Nand Kishore. That’s why he was comfortable working with lower caste
weavers.
The
journey
Nand Kishore spent much of his time working with weavers.
He became more interested in weaving such that he sometimes ate lunch close to
the looms. Within two years, his home-based rugs factory scaled up to six
looms. That’s when he began to take small projects from exporters. Eventually,
he realized that he had to find other ways to expand his home-based carpet
business.
Perhaps, the first and most important step that Nand
made was to establish a weavers’ network. He installed 2 to 3 looms in each of
the small villages near Churu. Soon, his business expanded to reach Jodhpur. Within
8 years, Nand covered almost the entire Rajasthan.
Eventually, Nand realized that the government was
interested in promoting the carpet weaving industry in the Gujarat tribal
belts. That’s when he decided to move to Jhalod. This was a small town in the
Gujarat’s tribal bet. He appointed commanders in the area to oversee weaving
activities in the entire Rajasthan. At that time, Jaipur Rugs had 200 looms in
the region. Within the 8 years that Nand stayed in Gujarat, he established a
network of 10,000 rug weavers.
Challenges
Nandi returned to Jaipur in 1999 and started the
Jaipur Rugs formally. At that time, the business was called Jaipur Carpets. Unfortunately,
Nand divided the business with his brother who had been working with him. Therefore,
he was left with 100 looms in Rajasthan and 10,000 looms in Gujarat. This was
one of the major challenges of Jaipur Rugs. Additionally, Nandi lacked the necessary
skills of a businessman.
He hired a team of weavers and eventually realized
that some of them wanted to dupe him while others lacked efficiency. Therefore,
he replaced many people in his business. Later, his children saw the challenges
that he faced and in 2005, they began to join him.
Today, Jaipur Rugs is entirely a family business.
However, it combines profits pursuit with kindness. The company focuses on
benefiting all stakeholders, including artisans, employees, channels that the
business works with, buyers, suppliers, consumers and their loved ones or
families.
Although Jaipur Rugs was doing well in the first
year, it soon incurred losses. That’s when Nand realized that he had to learn
organizational skills. He began to attend seminars and lectures. He also
listened to talks by successful people to learn from them.
Branching
out
In 2006, Jaipur Rugs underwent a major
restructuring. It’s also at this time that the company formally changed its
name to Jaipur Rugs from Jaipur Carpets. It became a foundation with a branch
in the US. The US arm was given the name Jaipur Living. Based in Atlanta, this
branch was initially called Jaipur Rugs Incorporated.
The aim of Jaipur Rugs Foundation was to reach out
to the rural, remote areas and create bonds with village communities. This
enabled the communities to start weaving rugs and their lives too. Through
partnerships with Jaipur Rugs Foundation, these communities receive training,
education, and healthcare. The underemployed and unemployed people in the
remote areas in India also get economic opportunities through these
partnerships.
Today, Jaipur Rugs has a network of skilled weavers
in most rural, poor areas in India. It also engages in community mobilization
and training. New Jaipur Rugs artisans are trained at their doorsteps. The
company takes finished rugs to different markets globally.
The
future
Currently, Jaipur Rugs has more than 40,000
artisans. According to Nand Kishore, the company aims at bringing emotional
connection between weavers and the end-users of its rugs. The company is also
focused on securing more share of its wealth for the weavers by making them its
stakeholders. Additionally, the enterprise intends to penetrate the Indian home
décor sector deeper with premium rugs. It’s also partnering with other
retailers to ensure that its rugs reach the end users regardless of their
locations globally.
